THE BENCH

FORM BEGINS WITH THE HAND.

Thabile Dubula works from the bench in Cape Town, using techniques including sawing, soldering, hand-shaping, polishing and stone setting. The finish begins with process: cut, form, join, refine.

SAWMetal is cut at the bench to establish the first line of the piece.
FORMCurves and profiles are shaped by hand, giving the design its physical proportion.
SOLDERMetal elements are joined with heat where the construction requires it.
POLISHSurfaces are refined and polished to bring the final form into focus.
